An original and individual lucky charm - something special at Easter
In most cultures, eggs are central to Easter. The Ukrainian art of decorating eggs, or Pysanky, is an ancient tradition. Ukrainian families create Pysanky eggs before Easter by dying an egg a particular color, putting beeswax over the portion of the color that they want to remain, and then washing away the rest to leave the pattern they desire. This process is repeated with different colors until the whole egg is complete. Then the yolk is drained, and the egg is given as a gift to offer protection and bring good fortune.
Do you know someone who could benefit from some good luck wishes at Easter?
Send best wishes to a friend, loved-one or work colleague at Easter . . Help them commemorate this event - whatever their faith. See SHOP for range of EASTER gifts.
Easter gets its name from Eostre, the great mother goddess of the Saxons of Northern Europe. Eggs were associated with spring by pagans as a symbol of germinating life, and the custom of giving eggs was incorporated into the Christian tradition as a way to symbolise Christ's resurrection. Eggs, often forbidden during Lent, were bought to the tables at Easter (dyed red) to symbolise the joy of the celebration.
Traditionally, on Easter Monday, single girls in Britain would wear one black garter and one yellow one to increase their chance of marriage before the end of the year. A kind-hearted bride would wear a friend's garter to increase her odds. A child born on Good Friday and baptised on Easter Sunday is reputed to have the gift of healing. Instead of chocolate eggs and bunnies that are soon gone, help your loved ones commemorate this festival with a unique and meaningful present.
The Indalo shape
(whether it be classical like Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man, or
spiritual as in the Rainbow Warrior of the ancient North American Indian
Cree tribe), is a popular symbol (like the clover leaf, horseshoe, or
scarab) used to pass on good luck sentiments to friends and family.
It is unclear whether the origin of the actual word Indalo applied to
Spain's rainbow warrior figure, is San Indalecio - a 1st Century AD
saint who was sent by Rome to evangalise the Iberian Peninsular (and who
was martyred just outside Almeria city), or the phrase 'Indal Eccius'
which means 'Messenger of the Gods' in old Iberian, or 'In Deus' which
means 'According to God' in Latin. Either way, the little lucky charm is considered a guardian angel (a
bit like a St. Christopher) . . not only being a symbol of good luck
but also representing Man's ethereal connection with the universe in
which we live. Our Indalo charms come from Almeria in southern Spain close to where the original Indalos were discovered. This is a region of ancient culture believed to be the origin of the Neolithic civilisation that spread up into the whole of northern Europe between 4000 and 2000 BC - and the beginning of a megalithic era that was one of the great periods of Spanish and European history and included the construction of the mystical monuments of Stonehenge and Avebury in Britain. Cave paintings of Indalo-type shapes mingle with representations of suns, spirals, animals and labyrinths, each with their own mystical and esoteric meaning.
