In western culture, champagne is drunk or a cake is given as a present to say congratulations. It can be decorated with the person’s name and/or the message of congratulations.

In Macedonian folklore, as in Southern Greece, the return of the swallow is hailed with hearty enthusiasm and its nest under the eaves or on the rafters of a house is welcomed as an omen of wealth. On the first of March the local lads make a wooden image of the bird, revolving it on a pivot, which they adorn with flowers and go round the houses in groups “a-gooding”, that is, singing a song of congratulations in return for which they receive gifts. In China, stone or jade chimes sometimes referred to as “musical stones” are fashioned as boomerang-shaped objects to impart congratulations to friends, colleagues and relatives. They are usually given as a collection and hung in rows like clothes pegs or coat hangers.

In New Jersey and New York, tossing a few coins onto the floor of a newly purchased car is a sign of good luck and congratulations on your new car. A predominately Roman Catholic practice is to place a medal of Saint Christopher, the patron saint of travellers, inside the car. In Thailand, drivers hang yellow jasmine garlands from their car mirror as an offering to the spirit guardian who is believed to protect the vehicle and its inhabitants. Buying a new car in Thailand can be a complicated affair because the date of purchase is auspicious, the colour is lucky and the number plate should also contain some auspicious numbers (3 and 9 are good). Once purchased, a monk may preside over a ceremony to bless the car.

The Indalo shape (whether it be classical like Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man, or spiritual as in the Rainbow Warrior of the ancient North American Indian Cree tribe), is a popular symbol (like the clover leaf, horseshoe, or scarab) used to pass on good luck sentiments to friends and family.

Our lucky charms come from Almeria in southern Spain close to where the original Indalos were discovered. This is a region of ancient culture believed to be the origin of the Neolithic civilisation that spread up into the whole of northern Europe between 4000 and 2000 BC – and the beginning of a megalithic era that was one of the great periods of Spanish and European history and included the construction of the mystical monuments of Stonehenge and Avebury in Britain. Cave paintings of Indalo-type shapes mingle with representations of suns, spirals, animals and labyrinths, each with their own mystical and esoteric meaning.

Pass on your good luck sentiments to friends or loved ones . .
