Good luck birthday gift
The gift of an Indalo passes on birthday wishes.

Many years ago, when Britain was ruled by Rome, Apis (Hap-Hapi-Hapy) was one of the Gods worshipped, and the word ‘happy’ in the birthday greeting Happy Birthday, dates back to the word ‘Hap’ in Old English. For this reason, when you wish someone ‘happy’ birthday, you are really wishing the Gods to come upon them and bring them good luck. Happy has been translated into other languages in a literal way (‘feliz’, for example, in Spanish as in ¡Feliz cumpleaños!) but, once again, it is tradition and folklore that lie behind many celebrations and commemorations.

People have always believed in good and evil spirits, and folklore has it that spirits gather around a person who is celebrating his or her birthday. Years ago (and even nowadays in some parts of the world) everyone was afraid of these spirits, thinking that they would cause harm to the birthday boy or girl. And so, friends and relatives would gather round the child and wish them “Happy Birthday” so that their good wishes would protect them. Giving presents was believed to bring even greater protection . . as did eating together, and so the concept of the birthday party (and of giving birthday presents in general) was born. In very early days, only kings or prominent men were thought important enough to celebrate their birthdays in this way. But as time has gone on, ordinary people now celebrate Birthdays like this too.

Folklore says that if someone celebrating their Birthday blows out all the candles on a birthday cake in one blow, it will bring them good luck. The early Greeks and Romans thought that candles had magical powers – carrying up their wishes and their prayers to the Gods above. Of course, this is all accompanied (in the English-speaking world at any rate) by a raucous chorus of ‘Happy Birthday’. On a child’s first birthday in Malta, parents organise a game where a variety of symbolic objects are placed around the child. These can include a hard-boiled egg, a Bible, a crucifix or rosary beads, a book, and so on. Whichever object the child shows most interest in is said to reveal the child’s path and fortune as they mature and grow-up. In astrology, the date, hour, and place of birth are clues to the person’s future as well as to their bad or good fortune.
We also have hand-crafted lucky charms which come from Almeria in southern Spain close to where the original Indalos were discovered. This is a region of ancient culture believed to be the origin of the Neolithic civilisation that spread up into the whole of northern Europe between 4000 and 2000 BC – and the beginning of a megalithic era that was one of the great periods of Spanish and European history and included the construction of the mystical monuments of Stonehenge and Avebury in Britain. Cave paintings of Indalo-type shapes mingle with representations of suns, spirals, animals and labyrinths, each with their own mystical and esoteric meaning.
The Indalo shape (whether it be classical like Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man, or spiritual as in the Rainbow Warrior of the ancient North American Indian Cree tribe), is a popular symbol (like the clover leaf, horseshoe, or ladybird) used to pass on good luck sentiments to friends and family.
